Paintball: what it is, how to play and how to get started

What is paintball
In paintball every player uses a marker that fires gelatin spheres filled with non-toxic, biodegradable paint. When they hit they break and leave a clearly visible mark: elimination is objective, there is no need to “call” yourself out.
It is the most immediate and physical tactical sport: high pace, a hit you can feel, decisions in a split second. It comes in a woodland version (wide, wooded scenarios) and a speedball version (small fields with inflatable bunkers, fast and competitive).

From lightning-fast speedball to large wooded scenarios, every match has its own objective.
Capture the flag
The classic mode: grab the flag in the center or in the enemy base and carry it home.
Speedball
A small, symmetrical field with inflatable bunkers: fast, intense and spectacular matches.
Elimination
No respawns: once you are hit you are out until the end of the round. The last team standing wins.
Attack and defense
One team defends a position while the other attacks within the time limit. Then you switch sides.
Domination
Control the strategic points on the map and hold them for as long as possible.
Scenario / Woodland
Large groups on wide, wooded scenarios, with objectives and a storyline to see through.
The gear to get started
For your first time you do not need to buy anything: fields rent out the marker and mask.
The marker
It is the device you fire the paintballs with. To start, a rental mechanical model is perfectly fine: simple and reliable. The types you come across most often:
- Mechanical Simple, sturdy and affordable. Perfect for getting started.
- Electronic Light and with a high rate of fire, for speedball players.
- Magfed Magazine-fed: a more tactical and realistic pace, close to milsim.
Full-face mask (mandatory)
It protects your eyes and your whole face. It must always be worn in the field and never taken off during play, for any reason. It is the most important safety rule in paintball.
Clothing
Thick clothing or a padded suit: the hits sting. Gloves and field shoes. Often provided by the venue.
The paintballs
Gelatin filled with non-toxic, biodegradable paint. Bought on site and the main expense.
The rules and fair play
A few clear rules make paintball a safe and fun sport for everyone.
Full-face mask always on in the field. Never take it off during play.
Objective elimination: if the paintball breaks and leaves a mark, you are hit.
Velocity limits and a minimum shooting distance: no point-blank shots (overshooting).
Respect for the field, staff and opponents, always.
