Airsoft: what it is, how to play and how to get started

What airsoft is
In airsoft (known as softair in Italy) each player uses a replica (called an ASG, Air Soft Gun) that fires spherical 6 mm plastic BBs, propelled by compressed air, gas or an electric system. Power is limited and regulated by each field: safety comes first.
It is not a "score the points" target game like a shooting range: it is a tactical simulation. What counts is teamwork, movement, communication and respect for the rules. That is why it draws people looking for adrenaline, a social scene and an immersive outdoor experience.

How you play: the game modes
Every match revolves around an objective. These are the most played modes.
Team Deathmatch
Two teams go head to head: whoever eliminates the most opponents wins.
Capture the flag
Grab the enemy objective and bring it back to your base without getting hit.
Domination
Control the strategic points on the map and hold them for as long as you can.
Elimination
No respawns: if you get hit, you are out until the end of the round. Maximum tension.
VIP / Escort
One team protects a target player, the other tries to take them out.
MilSim
Long, realistic scenarios, with roles, multiple objectives and rules of engagement.
The gear to get started
For your first time you do not need to buy anything: almost every field rents out a replica and protective gear.
The replica (ASG)
Replicas reproduce real firearms and are chosen based on your role. To get started, an electric assault rifle is perfect: versatile, reliable and affordable.
- Assault rifles The most versatile choice and the best starting point: they work in almost any scenario.
- Submachine guns (SMG) Compact and easy to handle, ideal for tight spaces and CQB.
- Sniper rifles Single, long-range shots that reward patience and positioning.
- Support (LMG) A high volume of fire to cover your team and hold positions.
- Pistols A secondary backup weapon, for when space is too tight.
Eye protection (mandatory)
This is the single most important thing. Goggles or a mask with certified impact-resistant lenses, worn at all times on the field, no exceptions. When it comes to eye protection, you never compromise.
Clothing
Comfortable and durable, camo or dark. Hiking boots and gloves. At the start, clothes you do not mind getting dirty are enough.
The BBs
Spherical 6 mm and biodegradable: they are kind to the environment and required by most fields.
The rules and fair play
Airsoft stands on a handful of golden rules. It is a safe sport precisely because the people who play it take them seriously.
Eye protection always on in the playing area. No exceptions.
Call your hits: the moment a BB touches you, raise your hand and call "hit".
Power limits: every field sets a maximum (in fps or joules) and minimum engagement distances.
Respect for the field, the staff and your opponents, always.
